California Recall

Sir

Your leader (07 October) suggests that Governor Davis's behaviour has been incompetent not criminal and that this does not rise to the level of a recall. But if the board of a public company had hidden a budget crisis to take them through an AGM and rights issue, as Davis did with last year's election, they would face not just recall by shareholders but criminal prosecution as well. The law holds politicians to a lower standard of accountability and integrity - but then politicians write the law. Fortunately it seems that California's voters are not prepared to accept this lower standard.

Yours truly,

Quentin Langley
