Caspar Weinberger

Caspar Weinberger died yesterday aged 88.

His role in winning the cold war was as great as any except Ronald Reagan and, perhaps, Margaret Thatcher. My own summary of his policies, devised when he was in office in the 1980s, still looks fair 20 years later: "Arms race? Okay, you're on. Let's see who has bread riots first".
