Gerry Adams and the IRA

Gerry Adams and Martin McGuinness have let it be known that they have "resigned" from the IRA's Army Council. Of course, they have both consistently denied being members of the Army Council, so let's not too much stock in their honesty on this matter, or any other.

PJ O'Rourke has suggested the only worthwhile question to ask to Adams is "Did you personally kill anyone, or did you just help?" The answer is he has personally killed.

The truth is, they have both been involved in planning and ordering murders for decades. They have also personally killed people. The IRA has a blood in - blood out policy. You have to kill people to advance up the ranks, and it doesn't recognise the concept of "resignation".

Adams ordered the failed assassination attempt on the Prince and Princess of Wales, but it didn't stop him expressing his sadness at the Princess's actual death a few years later.
