Poverty

To The Economist

05 September 2003

Sir

Your article on poverty in the US (05 September 2003) misses an important point. As in other western countries most of the poor in the US have food, clothing, and shelter, usually TVs, and mobile phones and frequently even cars. What people in the poorest areas do not usually have are police protection, decent schools and proper health care. The private sector provides goods and services to everyone. It is government services that fail the poor.

Yours truly,

Quentin Langley
