THE Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, has criticised the new web-based media for "paranoid fantasy, self-indulgent nonsense and dangerous bigotry". He described the atmosphere on the world wide web as a free-for-all that was "close to that of unpoliced conversation".

While it is difficult to dispute the Archbishop's point that there are paranoid fanatasists and dangerous bigots online, he may find, if he
looks, that there are some offline too. There may even be some in his
congregation. What really concerns me is his apparent belief that
conversations ought to be policed. That really is dangerous bigotry.
